Chelsea avoided a third successive home Premier League defeat with a convincing and desperately needed victory over struggling Wolves.

Skipper John Terry headed the hosts ahead early on and close-range strikes from Daniel Sturridge and Juan Mata meant the match was as good as settled by the interval.

And, although the Blues had numerous chances to add to their lead after the break, under-pressure manager Andre-Villas Boas will just be relieved to restore some confidence after a dreadful run.

Chelsea's hopes of qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League are in the balance after a late winner gave Bayer Leverkusen a 2-1 win in Germany.

The Blues knew victory would see them through and they looked in good shape after Didier Drogba's neat finish.

But substitute Eren Derdiyok headed Leverkusen level with 17 minutes to go.

In the final minute Manuel Friedrich headed in to leave the Blues needing a goalless draw or win against Valencia in two weeks' time to progress.

Frank Lampard's sixth league goal of the season secured Chelsea victory as Blackburn's troubles continued.

Andre Villas-Boas's side had lost their previous two league matches - but Lampard headed in Branislav Ivanovic's clever cross.

Blackburn fans hired a plane to fly over Ewood Park with a banner calling for manager Steve Kean's dismissal.

Glen Johnson's late winner gave Liverpool victory as Chelsea's indifferent run of form continued.

The Reds recorded a Premier League double over Chelsea last season - and secured three points again as Johnson produced a moment of individual brilliance to clinch victory with three minutes left.

The recalled Maxi Rodriguez crowned a sweeping passing move to give the visitors a half-time lead, but Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas looked to have changed the course of the game when substitute Daniel Sturridge equalised after the interval.

Chelsea carried their inconsistent Premier League form into Europe as they were held to a disappointing draw by Genk in Champions League Group E.

Ramires put the Blues ahead after a neat exchange with Fernando Torres before Raul Meireles hit the crossbar.

A Thomas Buffel handball gave Chelsea the chance to double their lead but David Luiz's penalty was easily saved.
